Who We Work With:

grassroots sport

At the heart of grassroots sports clubs in Exeter, our approach is centred on enhancing the experience and skills of young athletes through dedicated coaching sessions.

We focus on evolving coaching practices to engage children effectively, fostering both their enthusiasm and skill development. A key aspect of our work is injury prevention, ensuring each session begins with correct and professional warm-ups, tailored to the young athletes' needs. Our structured sessions are carefully designed to balance technical skill development, physical conditioning, and enjoyment, providing a comprehensive and enjoyable sports experience. This commitment to grassroots sports not only nurtures young talent but also develops the coaching staff to ensure safe sessions throughout the season.

Schools

In our collaboration with local schools, we prioritise enhancing the physical education experience for students.

We conduct engaging sessions focused on developing students' athletic skills and fostering a love for physical activity. Emphasising injury prevention, we support the teaching staff by introducing specific warm-up routines and structured activities tailored to the needs of young learners. However our approach goes beyond just physical activity and development; we aim to instil a sense of teamwork, discipline, and fun in sports.

By working closely with educators, we ensure that our sessions align with the schools' physical education goals, contributing to the overall health and wellbeing of the student community. This partnership with schools is pivotal in promoting an active and healthy lifestyle from an early age, laying the foundation for positive lifelong fitness habits.

Youth Gym Classes

Our Youth classes, categorised into Explorers, Pioneers, and Conquerors, are designed to cater to the diverse needs and developmental stages of young participants.

In the Explorers group, we focus on introducing basic athletic skills and movements in a fun, engaging environment, perfect for sparking an initial interest in physical activity. As children progress to the Pioneers level, we delve deeper into skill development, emphasising coordination, balance, and foundational sports techniques. This stage is crucial for building confidence and a deeper understanding of various sports.

The Conquerors group is tailored for older children, where we focus on refining advanced skills, strategic thinking in sports and programme development, and fostering a strong sense of teamwork and leadership.

Each class is structured to provide a safe, supportive, and motivating environment, ensuring that children of all ages and abilities enjoy their journey in physical fitness and sports. Our approach is holistic, aiming not just at physical development, but also at instilling values and life skills that young individuals carry with them throughout their lives.

Hear From Our Partners

  • "... if you are looking to invest in grassroots sport, U7 and Matt Handford are an ideal partner to work with."

“We were looking for a partner to deliver personal fitness and conditioning training to our Under 15’s and Under 16’s to help with their growth development. We were not disappointed!

Matt has delivered some exceptional sessions to support our pre-season, with the players now much more familiar in recognising the importance of conditioning and how to adapt their own personal fitness routines. Fitness and conditioning can at times be a chore - especially for young players - but the fun and commitment from Matt truly resonated with the players asking for more sessions.

I can’t recommend this initiative any more highly and recommend if you are looking to invest in grassroots sport, U7 and Matt Handford are an ideal partner to work with.

  • "Every Athlete I have sent to him has made improvements."

I started using Matt as our Primary Strength Training Coach approximately 3 or so years ago. Every Athlete I have sent to him has made improvements. Not only in Strength but in knowledge & application regarding their Strength Training.

I would highly recommend Matt for anyone who is looking to make improvements.

  • "They made the sessions totally interactive, fun, and safe and the students were fully engaged throughout."

We have worked closely with U7 for the last 18 months. They share our vision and values that young people need a greater understanding of their bodies and how they can exercise them more effectively and safely, to develop a wide range of skills across a broad spectrum of activities and sports.

They ran several programmes across Key Stage 3, but mainly focusing on movement skills and Strength and Conditioning. They have a great rapport with the students and got them to work and think differently about their bodies, maybe more so than a mainstream PE teacher is able to. They made the sessions totally interactive, fun, and safe and the students were fully engaged throughout, even asking ‘when will they be back?’.

Ultimately, they were very professional and have high levels of subject knowledge but are able to impart this upon the students in a user-friendly manner which is more relevant to them, at their age. We really noticed the difference in some of our students not only in their doing but also their understanding of how they can use their bodies more effectively in other areas of the curriculum.

  • Matford Brook Academy

Students loved the session, they found it really valuable being in a professional gym environment. They enjoyed being shown how to use different pieces of equipment, as well as testing themselves to see their power and strength output.

The pupils gained valuable experience working with Matt, he taught them key fundamental principles which they can transfer in to the PE curriculum and in their own sports performance.
